Volunteer Of The Month It was Melissa Ungar's music that brought her to volunteer at VoicePrint, Canada's audio newsstand, and it is with her music that she wants to return the favour. Some of the proceeds from Melissa's recently released CD Checkered Past will be donated to VoicePrint. Melissa donates her time every Thursday afternoon at VoicePrint reading articles for from such diverse publications as Pet World magazine and the Globe and Mail newspaper. Four years ago, Melissa found out about the media charity from a voicework contact she got in touch with regarding her music. It is through VoicePrint that newspapers and magazines can be heard, allowing people who can't independently access print due to, for example, blindness or physical impairment, low literacy skills or just getting older, to listen to in-depth articles from over 600 newspapersand magazines. Melissa describes herself as a studio musician who has a broad range of experience (from jingles to recording medical text). She describes Checkered Past as fusion of pop and adult contemporary styles. I chose those particular songs because they mean so much to me, music wise, spiritually, and lyrically, she says. Her future plans in music include finding a songwriter with which she can collaborate. I know the studio is my favourite place to be, so to work in that environment as much as possible would be amazing, and with a good song-writer would be even better.
